As a dancing anthropologist I travel the world dancing and researching. I fell in love with sabar when I saw women dance at a sabar event in Senegal in 2002. Studying sabar is hard work! 20 years later, I am happy to share the joys of sabar with you.

From the heart of sabar in Senegal
Sophie and her team of drummers organize gatherings where sabar lovers from around the globe meet in sabar circles. Our approach on sabar as a complex cultural phenomenon from the perspective as both an anthropologist and a sabar dancer reflects in her transmission. Sophie aims bringing to you the integrality of sabar culture, and not just dance steps.

Our work is all about the magic of the sabar circles, in which the connection between dance(rs) and drum(mers) is essential. Sophie’s method in the transmission of sabar is clear and simple: sing it, play it, dance it. What we sing, what we drum and what we dance is connected. Knowledge of rhythms is essential and will help you decode sabar and gain independence in the sabar circle.
